JAGNA – The whole baranagy of Lonoy and the municipality on Easter Sunday celebrated the heroism of Capt. Gregorio “Goyo” Casenas in a whole day affair.
Capt. Goyo, the hero of the town of Jagna fought for liberation from the Americans in 1901. A planned attack on Easter Sunday of 1901 brought tragedy to Capt. Goyo and his comrades as a fellow Jagnaanon informed the Americans of the planned ambush. The troop together with Capt. Goyo were bayoneted in their dugouts and a total of 406 died in the Lonoy Massacre.
The day started off with the celebration of the holy mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Pablito Saludes attended by Lonoyanons.
A wreath laying ceremony followed with Mayor Fortunato R. Abrenilla leading. Vice Mayor Euperio Lloren and Hon. Nimfa Lloren offered flowers to the “Lonoy Marker” which symbolized the heroism of 406 Lonoyanons.
Barangay officials followed the laying of their flowers headed by Punong Barangay Merlito Ranis.
An annual program was held showcasing the talents of Lonoyanons.
A visitor representing Governor Edgar Chatto graced the activity.
Engr. Anastacio Daniel, a native of Lonoy, was the guest speaker enjoining all Lonoyanons and the officials of Jagna to help Lonoy move forward. He encouraged all to do something even how small it is to help in the progress of Lonoy. Engr. Daniel stressed that the fight for freedom of Capt. Goyo will not be for naught if the people will join hands in fighting for the good of the barangay as well as the town.
