Growing Agriculture: Municipality of Jagna Food Sufficiency and Resilience

By Chreeve Sividan
The Municipality of Jagna places a strong emphasis on agriculture and fishery programs as top priorities in its quest to achieve food sufficiency, sustainability, and support domestic tourism. Recognizing the value of promoting organic agriculture, the municipality aims to build resilience against the challenges of globalization and climate change.
Under the present administration of Mayor Joseph Rañola, proactive measures are being taken to secure funding sources and implement essential programs benefiting farmers and fisherfolk. Recent successful projects include the establishment of the Bio-composting Facility, valued at P5M, generously funded by the Department of Agriculture, and the acquisition of the Decorticating Machine from PCA. These initiatives underscore the commitment to effective farm waste management and organic compost/fertilizer production.
The Bio-composting Facility and the Decorticating Machine are vital components of managing farm waste efficiently, processing it into organic compost/fertilizer, and distributing it to local farmers for practical use. Ensuring the effectiveness of the organic produce, the Local Government Unit (LGU) conducts efficacy trials at the Jagna Agri-eco Park garden located at barangay Tubod Mar, Jagna, Bohol.
The first batch of the bio-composting facility proved fruitful, yielding 210 kilos of compost from market waste, shredded rice straw, carbonized rice hull, and chicken dung. This nutrient-rich compost/fertilizer was thoughtfully applied, transforming an old barren area into a flourishing demo farm. The positive impact on soil quality is evident, supporting the development of a productive agricultural demonstration site.
The collective efforts of the Municipality of Jagna in prioritizing agriculture, securing funding for crucial projects, and conducting efficacy trials demonstrate commendable strides towards achieving food sufficiency, sustainability, and resilience in the face of global challenges.
