Local chief Atty. Fortunato Abrenilla since assuming office has been in support of all agricultural efforts that will result to self sufficiency in rice production as well as secondary crops such as corn and the back to organic vegetable production program.
The Municipal Agriculture Office led by Mr. Camilo Rizano is a hectic department tasked to intensify the efforts towards self-sufficiency. Government programs concerning increasing agricultural production have been hooked line and sinker by the agriculture department. In arms wide open embracing innovations to farming.
The programs currently implemented in the town downloaded from the national, provincial government are Integrated Rice Technology Demonstration Project (Hybrid Rice) on Phase IV, Farmers Field School on Corn, Barangay Nutrition Council Garden and Gulayan sa Paaralan.
The ongoing Hybrid Rice project the purpose of which is technology transfer covers five hectares of riceland located at Sitio Siling, barangay Balili. There are 45 farmer participants. The varieties applied are SL 8, Bigante and Pioner.
The farmers will be attending a field school for the lecture part of what is going to be done and will apply their learnings in the field. The supervising rice technicians are Cecile Opada and Melendre Galve.
Hybrid Rice program has already proven successful in providing higher yield as evidenced by the other recipients of the project from the town.
Corn Division headed by supervising technician, Dioscoro Halina is implementing Farmers Field School on Corn program. The purpose is to determine which variety of corn is suited for a particular area applying 50:50 scheme organic and inorganic fertilizer.
There are 30 participants covering a total of 2,500 sqm. The varieties for testing are TSG 80, TSG 108, IPV-VAR 4, IPV-VAR 6.
A most promising program that promotes healthy life style is the ongoing program on Barangay Nutrition Council Garden. This program is managed by the Barangay Councils, Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and Barangay Health Workers (BHW).
This program is strictly following the campaign on the application of organic fertilizer to promote healthy living.
This has been an implemented program for a year and barangays have benefited as well as earned from their vegetable produce. The earnings of which are being used in the purchase of implements for the barangay feeding programs.
The Gulayan sa Paaralan program is currently implemented at Lonoy Heroes Memorial High School. The school, with the supervision of technician Amelia Virtudazo, has organized a 4H Club tasked to manage the Gulayan sa Paaralan. The members undergo an orientation on the proper handling of vegetable seedlings.
As the Municipality is supporting and embarking on the go back to organics programs, it is open to participate in events that will enhance its learning on the growing of crops using organic fertilizers and the new technology associated with the program. Recently, it participated in the 9th National Vegetable Congress on Go Organic Farming in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental last August 3-5. HVCDP Coordinator Amelia Virtudazo attended the congress. Upon coming home, she will transfer the technologies learned to fellow technicians.
