May as declared “Month of the Ocean” brought about different activities in support of the awareness campaign on caring and protecting the seas last May 27.
The DuGJan MPA Network composed of the collaborating towns of Duero, Jagna and Guindulman in partnership with the Bohol Integrated Development Foundation, Inc. (BIDEF) spearheaded the culmination activity of the Ocean Month in Cantagay, Jagna, Bohol with the theme “Buhay Dagat, Buhay Natin”.
The culmination activity focused on awareness campaign to children on the importance of the MPA and the reason for its presence along the coastal waters of the 3 towns.
Fifty children participated in the activity. Most were children of fisherfolks and or inhabitants near the shores.
There were lectures about the Marine Protected Areas, endangered species, and what to do when there are species stranded on the shores or seen floating aimlessly in the sea. The kids were given situations and where taught how to respond if the situation arises.
There were games, drawing activity as well as snorkeling for the kids. They were also provided free shirts for the activity.
Jagna Mayor Fortunato R. Abrenilla supported and encouraged the organizers to hold more activities toward the spreading of information as well as educating the townsfolk on the proper way of taking care of the seas as well as appreciating and properly taking advantage of the benefits of the seas.
Elrond Pido of BIDEF, Kristina Pahang of Physalus, Jeremy Horowitz of the LGU Jagna with his diving team from the Municipal Agriculture Office and Bantay Dagat, Pacheco Rances of DuGJan and many others organized the event.
