Jagna bags regional green banner award for nutrition

The Municipality of Jagna tops all other municipalities in the region in the Regional Nutrition Evaluation held on June 22 to become the 2010 Green Banner Awardee as Outstanding Municipality in Region VII with an overall score of 98.85%.

The recognition was in line with the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Plan Implementation (MELPI) for nutrition initiated by the Regional Nutrition Council. The MELPI is a management tool used in assessing efficiency and effectiveness of a program for nutrition improvement.

The first for Jagna to enter and win in this prestigious award for nutrition, the municipality boasts of its vigorous campaign to eradicate malnutrition as stated in its Municipal Nutrition Action Plan. With the help of interagency members composing the Municipal Nutrition Council and NGO partner, the municipality has implemented actions worthy of commendation.

The best practices of the municipality to be presented during the awarding are: its Daily Feeding for the whole year using the Manna Pack sponsored by the municipality’s partner NGO-Philos Health; the strict implementation of the Barangay Nutrition Council Garden (BNC Garden)/Gulayan sa Barangay to produce purely organic vegetables for consumption in the barangays of the town. This aims to promote organic farming for safe and healthy vegetable products. Many barangays have earned due to their incomes in the sale of their products.

Another best practice is the continuous production of the NUTRIMIX, a combination of rice, monggo, native chocolate, sugar and powdered milk which is sold to the barangays at a very low price and a very nutritious food supplement for young children.

The municipality also implements hog dispersal and goat dispersal to the barangays.

These implemented programs were presented to the evaluator during the Regional Nutrition Evaluation last June 22.

Mayor Fortunato Abrenilla has been ecstatic upon learning of the award. It is a feat for the municipality to bag the Regional GBA as well as just recently he received another award from the National Nutrition Council – Outstanding Municipality in the implementation of the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon.

The mayor has been passionate in his support for nutrition since he assumed office and has been aiming to get a top place award for nutrition programs. He believes that a hale and hearty citizenry is the way to a healthy municipality which translates to a strong and stable country.

The awardees will be honored during the 2011 Grand Nutrition Awards on August 5 to be held at Cebu Parklane Hotel, Cebu City.
