The LGU of Jagna reinforces its efforts towards the protection of its marine ecosystem thru the conduct of an operational planning workshop last October 14 at the Capt. Gegorio “Goyo” Casenas Hall.
In Mayor Fortunato Abrenilla’s welcome message to the participants he stated the importance of marine environmental protection emphasizing that if the community takes care of its marine resources it will give back its bounty to the community.
Mayor Abrenilla mentioned to continue exploring for potential tourism spots but hand in hand with it is the mindset to above all protect the environment.
The business of the day started with the rationale delivered by Engr. Gerry Araneta, MPDC, with the role of the LGU in the continuous protection of the Marine Protected Areas (MPA). It was reiterated by Engr. Araneta that the LGU should take a more active role in implementing policies, regulations and enforcement mechanisms to protect and conserve the marine and coastal environment.
He also presented the objectives to guide the workshop: 1) To provide practical guide for the implementation of MPA management plan; 2) To formulate strategies that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the MPA stakeholders in carrying out its roles and functions; 3) To prepare an action plan detailing the time frame and resource requirements to implement the strategies and activities of the Jagna MPA; 4) To implement checklist/criteria for best practices of MPA and, 5) To develop a monitoring and evaluation system.
Engr. Araneta emphasized that the plan to be crafted for 2012 should be doable.
MA Camilo Rizano facilitated the assessment of the current plan stating the accomplished tasks, ongoing tasks as well as the unaccomplished tasks. SWOT analysis followed to guide in crafting the MPA Operational Plan.
Participants were barangay captains from the coastal barangays, representatives of the Bantay Dagat, Municipal Agriculture Office Fishery Division staff headed by MA Camilo Rizano, representative from Jagna’s NGO partner BIDEF, Municipal Councilors, Pos and representative from the tourism sector.
