LGU-JAGNA IS AN INCH AWAY FROM ISO 14001 CERTIFICATION

The local government unit of Jagna will soon receive its ISO 14001:2004 certification subsequent to the external audit stage 2 conducted by TUV SUD on April 11-12, 2011.

The Technischer Uberwachungs Vereine (TUV) which originated in Suddeutchland (SUD), Germany as the certifying body positively recommended LGU-Jagna of the said international standard after three years of rigidly complying sets of standard through series of internal and external audits relevant with environmental management system (EMS).

The ISO 14001:2004 is an internationally accepted standard that sets out how a company can go about putting in place an effective EMS.

The standard is designed to address the delicate balance between maintaining profitability and reducing environmental impact which is becoming an increasingly important issue across the globe, with pressure to minimize the impact coming from a number of sources: local and national governments, regulators, trade associations, customers, employees and shareholders.

To recall, the EMS program in Jagna started when the Bohol Integrated Development Foundation (BIDEF) inked partnership with the LGU during the mayoralty of Vice Mayor Exuperio Lloren in 2009.

An EMS team was established to oversee the implementation specifically in the four pilot areas such as the Offices of the Mayor, Municipal Engineer, Planning & Development and Rural Health Unit while BIDEF provided the technical assistance.

Following the International Standard, the EMS team has been addressing requirements to enable the LGU to develop and implement a policy and objectives which take into account legal requirements and other requirements to which it subscribes  and information about significant environmental aspects as well.

The extent of the application has included on procedures like Significance Evaluation of Environmental Impacts, Environmental Management Planning, Evaluation or Audit of the Implementation and Review or Revision of documents for the improvements of the program.
