Partnerships forged for calamay development

3 significant events were showcased last September 25 as part of the LGU’s celebration of the town fiesta.

A dream come true for the Jagna calamay makers, the calamay service facility to be constructed with local funding will be for use in the processing and production of Bohol’s original  – the Jagna Calamay.

The calamaderas are given a station for them to develop a calamay of global quality. With a vision to reach a wide spectrum of customers, the calamay has to be developed further to enhance its quality and prolong its shelf life.

A MOA signing of different sectors with a vision to commit and support the efforts towards the development of the Jagna Calamay dubbed as Calamay Convergence followed the groundbreaking ceremonies.

Very important persons present who signified commitment and support were led by Mayor Fortunato R. Abrenilla and the Sangguniang Bayan led by Vice Mayor Exuperio Lloren. Governor Edgar M. Chatto; Cong. Arthur C. Yap; Executive Director of the Philippine Commission on Women Ms. Emmeline L. Verzosa; Canadian International Development Agency’s (CIDA) Head of Aid in the Philippines Mr. Luke Myers; Deputy Project Manager of the Great Women Project Ms. Rebecca Corral; Philippine Science and Technology Center Director Engr. Marcial Tanggaan; Chairperson of the Jagna Calamay Makers and Multi-Purpose Cooperative (JACAMACO) Ms. Mariebel Bucog; Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Ms. Marietta S. Gasatan; Agricultural Training Institute Center Director Dr. Carolyn May O. Daquio; Representative of Engr. Eugene Cahiles Project Manager of Bohol Agricultural Promotion Center (BAPC) Ms. Cely Galorio; Provincial Director of the Philippine Coconut Authority Mr.  Timoteo Lago, Jr. was represented by Mr. Primo Galendez; DTI representatives Mr. Primo Gabin and Ms. Maria Soledad L. Balistoy are the partners who signed the Memorandum of Agreement of the Calamay Convergence. The Department of Labor and Employment is a partner too.

Groundbreaking ceremonies and Calamay Convergence MOA signing were spearheaded by the LGU and Municipal Technical Working Group of the GREATWOMEN Project headed by Municipal Councilor Nimfa Lloren.

Jagna Agri-Product Display and Farmer’s Funfair 2011 opened after the MOA signing. Gov. Edgardo Chatto, Madame Pureza V. Chatto and Mayor Fortunato Abrenilla led the ribbon cutting signifying the opening of the agri-fair witnessed by the 33 participating barangays.

With the theme “Taliwala sa Kausaban sa Panahon, Malungtarong Pagpanguma Atong Ipatunhay ug Palamboon. The 2-day affair showcased talented farmers in 3 different contest categories namely Banikanhong Awit, Kuradang and Balak. Contest prizes were provided by the LGU.

Agricultural products were displayed and offered for a fee to the buying public emphasizing the new Municipal Resolution on the promotion of the use of the bayong instead of plastics as containers.

The Agri-Fair is annually organized by the Municipal Agriculture Office.
