Quake jolts Bohol, affects Jagna

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) on October 18 released its partial damage assessment report on the  quake that jolted the whole province of Bohol at 8:12 in the morning of October 15, 2013 with a magnitude of 7.2. The quake lasted for 66 seconds causing severe destruction to lives and property in some parts of Bohol.

In the report all 33 barangays of the town were affected. The town of Jagna suffered minimal damage to property. There was no reported casualty during the earthquake and in its aftermath but one adult from barangay Pangdan was injured when hit with fallen debris. There is also no report of anyone missing.

The MDRRMC lead by Mayor Fortunato R. Abrenilla immediately convened right after the jolt was felt and mobilized its members into teams to conduct inspection of the damage caused and to provide assurance that there is no possibility of a tsunami occurring.

As of October 16, reported number of families affected was at 171. There were 61 affected families in barangay Calabacita; 7 in Mayana; 30 in Can-upao; 40 in Looc; and 33 in other barangays.

There were 39 families evacuated in Calabacita; 2 in Looc; 16 in Can-upao; 17 in Looc and 13 in other barangays. There were families reported homeless in the barangays of Mayana (1) and Can-upao (1).

Damage to properties were accounted partially. There are 5 houses totally damaged; 188 partially damaged. Four private buildings were reported damaged – 3 commercial establishments partially damaged and 1 school building (Genoveva building) of Central Visayan Institute Foundation. The municipal gymnasium was also declared not safe with damages.

The St. Michael the Archangel Church, a centuries-old church that withstood the earthquake in February 1990, suffered minor damages but still masses are being held outside of the church to ensure safety from the aftershocks.

Estimated cost of damage to agricultural infrastructure is at Php100,000 on minor cracks on some irrigation canals and structures.

Power interruption was felt but was restored in less than 24 hours.

Reported landslides at Sitio Sampong in Mayana, dispersed along the nautical highway at barangays Tubod Monte, Boctol and Camp Verde in Bangwalog, Duero; along Laca-Buyog road and at Tubod- Cansanga road. Still these roads and highways are passable with only one lane.

Emergency responses conducted were “rekoreda” after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake. Activate the MDRRMC to monitor and convene the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management (BDRRM) Action Officers. Radio announcements and advisory were made in coordination with PHILVOCS reports. Conduct of structural inspections and recommendations for safety measures and damage assessment to the barangays. The Jagna Emergency Medical and Rescue Unit (JEMRU) attended to emergency clearing of fallen debris and ensured immediate response to injuries.

Consolidation of reports from BDRRM Action Officers is still ongoing. Structural inspection on public schools is prioritized by the Inspection Team.
