Tree growing and coastal clean-up for CCC week

The Climate Change Commission in the Philippines designated November 19-25 as National Climate Change Consciousness Week. This is part of an intensive campaign to heighten the awareness of all Filipinos that climate change is inevitable therefore everybody should prepare for the effects.

The national government is embarking on the campaign to gain “collective cooperation” of all entities private and government as well as non government organizations to participate in the preparation. Part of this aim is disaster risk reduction and mitigation of the foreseen effects of climate change.

The Municipality of Jagna has lined up activities relative to the theme Climate Change Pilipinas: Naghahanda sa Pagbabagong Klima”. The activities to be conducted are tree growing at the landslide areas in Barangay Mayana; coastal clean-up in all the coastal barangays of Jagna; and induction of Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Action Officers for the 33 barangays to be led by Hon. Arturo Bullas the elected president. Afterwards, the newly inducted officers will conduct an information drive by putting up “no throwing of garbage” signs along the big rivers in the municipality.

The administration of Jagna Mayor Fortunato R. Abrenilla is actively pursuing the campaign to mitigate the effects of any disaster by preparing for it. He is in great support of national activities on the preservation of the natural environment believing that man should return to nature what it has so carelessly taken away. By this he means, among other things, that if one cuts trees, one should plant another to replace it. His administration is also in support of activities for the protection of marine resources thru strengthening the management of the MPAs; organized a bantay dagat team to patrol and monitor the coastal waters of the town; strict in law enforcement on the MPAs; constructed bantay dagat headquarters in two coastal barangays; instructed the building of 2 patrol boats for the use of bantay dagat teams in its monitoring activities; strengthened linkages with NGOs with aims to protect marine resources among others.

This activity is spearheaded by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
